After years of requests from users, Twitter has finally added keyword muting. This functionality wont be new to anyone using third party Twitter clients, such as TweetDeck or Tweetbot, but should prove useful to the millions of users who use the official apps and website.
Want to stop getting notifications for Tweets that contain certain words, usernames, or hashtags? Were giving you that control. http://pic.twitter.com/awoNHUYbTG

Keyword muting allows you to enter a specific keyword or phrase and after that tweets containing those words will be filtered from your notifications. It also lets you filter entire conversations from entering your notifications.
What you cant do is filter keywords on your timeline, which would have al so been a useful thing to have. I assume Twitter is afraid of losing out on ad revenue, which is probably why you cant mute keywords on the timeline.
Twitter says this is to curb the increase of abuse and harassment on its platform, especially in the past few years. To that end it has also made it easier to report abuse and also trained its staff to handle complaints better. Of course, none of this is going to stop people from being mean but at least now you dont have to look at it.
